Tips and Troubleshooting

Four Key Elements of Pool & Spa Maintenance:
(Information courtesy of Arch Chemical Corporation and Watkins Manufacturing)

  1. Keep the pool & surrounding area clean:
    • Brush side walls and pool bottom regularly
    • Empty skimmer & pump baskets as needed (during various parts of the year this can be more than once a day)
    • Vacuum debris from pool weekly
    • Skim surface water as needed
    • Monitor filter pressure gauge (check annually to ensure proper operation of your gauge)
    • Chemically clean your filter at least twice a season (we offer this service)
  2. Keep the water moving
    • Move the water through the filter trapping dirt and contaminants
    • Even distribution of chemicals
    • Eliminates “dead spots” where algae can bloom
    • Point return jets downward at a 45 degree angle and to one side (in concrete pools built by CVA, the returns are installed in the floor of the pool to ensure optimal circulation, so this would apply to vinyl pools and pools not built by CVA).
    • Run pump at least 10 to 12 hours daily, sometimes longer or after a rainstorm or heavy bather load.
  3. Why is water maintenance so important?
    • Swimmer & Soaker comfort
    • Protect pool or spa surface and equipment
    • Ensure sanitizer effectiveness
    • Reduces Maintenance costs
    • Inhibits algae growth
  4. Maintain a sound water treatment system that is EPA registered.
